A new study shows that Proscar can be used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, which affects 5% to 20% of men.
The treatment involves using Proscar, the active ingredient in Propecia, to treat BPH symptoms. But how it works is still a mystery, as the research in the study looked at more than 1,000 men.
“The results showed that Proscar can significantly decrease the size of the prostate and reduce the risk of BPH,” said Dr. Joseph L. Hercox, a urologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, who led the study.
The study involved men between the ages of 18 and 75 with BPH and a history of enlarged prostates, a condition that causes persistent symptoms. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either Proscar (0.625mg/m2) or placebo for a period of four months.
Results showed that men who took Proscar had a lower risk of BPH than those who did not. The Proscar group also showed a reduction in BPH risk in those with a history of enlarged prostates, which are associated with a decreased volume of the prostate.
Proscar is the first drug that has been approved for BPH treatment and is the only drug currently available for this indication. However, the use of Proscar in men with BPH is not yet common, and more studies are needed to determine its role in treating it.
While Proscar has been shown to improve symptoms, its use is not without risks. The drug has been linked to an increased risk of developing depression, a mental disorder known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and a higher rate of suicidal thoughts in those who use the drug.
