Used for:

• Proscar is used to treat and prevent the symptoms of atrial fibrillation (temporary memory loss or confusion) and to decrease the risk of strokes in men with elevated blood pressure
• Finasteride is used to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) and to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).
• Finasteride is also used to treat male pattern hair loss. It may also be used to treat high blood pressure in the lungs and to treat the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).

Usage:

• Use Proscar as directed by your doctor
• Take the medicine by mouth
• Follow the directions on your prescription label and read the enclosed insert before you start using it

Missed dose:

• Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra dose to make up for a missed dose.
• If you are not sure what to do after a missed dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
• If you are taking any other medication, or if you have any questions about your prescription, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
• Store Proscar at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Storage:

• Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
• Do not freeze.
• Keep Proscar in the original container. Do not keep it in a dry place.
• Keep it out of the reach of children.

Unused drug:

• Do not give to children or pets.
• It may be dangerous for pets to inhale the drug

Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

It is unclear whether the FDA has the authority to regulate the sale of finasteride (brand name Propecia) or whether it is an independent regulator. Minoxidil is only approved for treating male pattern baldness and BPH. Hair loss is a common occurrence and occurs due to a combination of physical and psychological factors. Hair loss may be caused by physical causes such as:

The main side effects associated with finasteride include:

• you have problems or serious side effects from taking Proscar

• you suffer from some form of liver or kidney problem Proscar treatment is not recommended for anyone under 18 years of age
